U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has announced thathe has picked California Senator Kamala Harris to be his running mate. Biden shared the news on Twitter yesterday, describing Harris as “a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants”. She is of Indian-Jamaican heritage and has consistently criticized President Trump, particularly his stance on race and handling of the pandemic. Harris has become the third woman to be nominated as a vice presidential candidate after Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 and Sarah Palin in 2008, neither of whom were on the winning ticket.

Polling data from The Economist/YouGov shows that Kamala Harris has proven consistently popular among Democratic voters and she was their first choice for the vice presidential candidacy long before Biden’s announcement yesterday. The poll also found that 51 percent of Biden’s supporters feel Harris will be an asset for his campaign while a mere 12 percent think she will damage it.
