The winning ticket was sold at a KC convenience store in the town of Simpsonville, not far from Greenville. The odds of winning were said to be 1 in 303 million and only one ticket matched all six numbers. Even though $1.537 billion sounds gargantuan by lottery standards, the jackpot was actually the second highest in history, behind a $1.586 billion Powerball prize in January 2016.
The winners of that jackpot were in Tennessee, California and Florida so the prize was split three ways. The third-largest win in U.S. history occurred last year when a single winner collected $758.7 million. This week’s winner might remain a mystery to the public as South Carolina allows its lottery winners to remain anonymous if they so desire. The winner will have an important choice to make. They can either choose an immediate cash payment of $877.8 million or opt for a full prize paid out in installments over 29 years.
