During his State of the Union address, President Trump announced that he has signed an executive order to keep the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay open.

He said that
“terrorists are not merely criminals. They are unlawful enemy combatants. And when captured overseas, they should be treated like the terrorists they are,”
His stance is at odds with his predecessor who wanted to close Guantanamo. During the Obama-era, hundreds of detainees were transferred from the detention facility and today, only 41 remain. The first of more than 700 arrived in January 2002 and many were held without charge or criminal trial. The facility has always proven controversial with questions raised about conditions, human rights and torture allegations.
