The European Union started off as a co-op between six European nations in 1951.

Among them were France and Germany who after the horrors of two world wars agreed to cooperate in the two key industries of coal & steel. In 1957, the European Coal and Steel Community was extended by the signing of the Treaty of Rome and eventually became the EU we know today. Currently, the EU seems to have a slightly better image with non-EU citizens.
