On Thursday, the White House floated the idea of imposing a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico in order to fund Donald Trump’s border wall.
A certain level of avocado angst was circulating on both sides of the border in the hours after the proposal became public knowledge. It could of course cause serious damage to the Mexican avocado industry but its impact on the wider economy is even more worrying. According to the Congressional Research Service, motor vehicles and parts form the bulk of US imports from Mexico.
