The rule of law is considered to be one of the main criterion by which just societies and states that respect the rights of their citizens are measured.
According to a ranking by the World Justice Project, Denmark is ranked highest and Venezuela is last when it comes to the rule of law. The United Kingdom makes the 10th place while the United States are ranked 18th.
The project authors have included eight criteria that feed into index score, such as government powers, corruption, fundamental rights or civil and criminal justice. According to the index, especially the criminal justice system lowers the US’ overall score. America ranks relatively high in constraining government powers and the absence of corruption.
