Earlier this week, U.S. authorities transferred 15 Guantanamo Bay inmates to the UAE, the largest single transfer since Obama was elected president.
The facility now hosts 61 prisoners, substantially fewer than its peak population of 684 from June 2003. Obama wants to close Guantanemo, stating that it contrary to U.S. values and undermines national security. However, his progress has proven slow amid Republican opposition and the faith of the remaining prisoners.
This chart shows the number of detainees held in Guantanamo by year (July of each year).
