When it comes to expenditure on prescription drugs across OECD countries, the United States in first place.
In 2013, the average American spent $1,026 on medicinal drugs, 50 percent higher than the OECD average of $500. Japan was in second place, 35 percent higher than average, with $752. Greece rounded off the top three with per capita expenditure of $721. Even though the rate of pharmaceutical expenditure has slowed down recently, people in OECD countries still spent $800 billion on medicinal drugs in 2013.
