Same-Sex Marriage

Written by Frank Li

With the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on same-sex marriage, America has become even more polarized, perhaps more than ever since before the Civil War! While the left is joyful (Obama: Ditch Religious Convictions About Same-Sex Marriage Already), the right is incensed (Ted Cruz: “Today Is Some of the Darkest 24 Hours in Our Nation’s History”).

Will it take another Civil War to resolve our differences? I hope not!

As an independent, I am fiscally conservative and socially moderate. But this “historic” ruling has pushed me over the edge: I think it will prove to be another total disaster for America. I must therefore speak out!

1. Bottom line

Marriage is between a man and a woman!

I am not against civil unions – Everybody has the right to live with anybody of self-choosing and laws should apply equally to all! But changing the definition of marriage like this is too much for America, or any other country! It has so many social implications that it will make our already dysfunctional country even more dysfunctional!

2. Marriage equality

We, to survive as a species, must re-produce! Human re-production requires mating between a man and a woman, or at least a genetic contribution from both!

How can we make the mating relationship between men and women equal? Over the past 2,000 years at least, most of the world has settled on the notion of marriage, which is the union between one man and one woman! It not only is fair to both men and women, but also has been the core of human civilization!

3. Individual freedom vs. rule of law

America is proud of at least two notions, individual freedom (or liberty) and rule of law, often without acknowledging, or even realizing, that they are diametrically contradictory! Individual freedom achieves its maximal degree without law, while rule of law achieves its maximal effect without individual freedom!

The challenge is to draw a fine line between them. Here is my take:

  1. The countries that can best draw the line will be most successful.
  2. By allowing same-sex marriage, America has let individual freedom run amok, which not only overwhelmingly trumps rule of law, but also destroys the basis for many existing laws, resulting in such massive social chaos that few countries on earth, including America, could possibly absorb it!

4. America is already dysfunctional!

Let’s do a reality check for America from five perspectives:

  1. Food stamps: Today, some 50 million Americans receive government-issued food stamps!
  2. Single-parent household: Too many kids live in “broken” families! For more, read: Almost half of children in single-mother homes live with never married mothers and More Millennial Mothers Are Single Than Married.
  3. U.S. jail population: One percent of the U.S. population is in jail (Incarceration in the United States)!
  4. Unemployment: The labor force participation rate has dropped to the 1978 level! For more, read: Labor Market Participation Rate Continues to Slump.
  5. The American Dream: Most Americans no longer believe that the American Dream, by any definition, is achievable. For more, read: The American Dream is out of reach.

For more, read: Civil Rights Act: 50 Years Later.

5. Why is America so dysfunctional?

Blame democracy, as we practice it today! For more, read: Diagnosis for America (Version 3) and Solution for America (Version 3).

More specifically, blame the broken “families” as the key reason behind the failure of the Great Society!

The historic ruling will further damage the home, the fabric of our country, so much that America will be further dysfunctional, irretrievably!

Mildly speaking, it’s called “self-destruction via confusion”.

6. Self-destruction via confusion

America has been trying to confuse itself, fundamentally and progressively, for the past few decades, at least. Here is one example:

At this pace, we are becoming a country of fools and lawyers, with the former relying on the latter for everything!

7. Discussion

America is being destroyed from within!

America, don’t we have enough problems already? Can we absorb another huge social change like same-sex marriage?

The magnitude of the damage caused by this historic ruling will not be apparent for quite some time until it’s too late, like JFK’s Executive Order 10988 (allowing public-sector unions) which has been destroying America for more than five decades without many Americans knowing it! However, this is predictable, if not already known: it causes many new conflicts in many aspects of life, especially in terms of religions!

For the folks on the right (as well as in the middle), two basic questions:

  1. Is this historic ruling yet another reflection of our imperfect democracy? Or
  2. Is this the inevitability of our democracy?

While many of you may answer yes to 1), I believe the correct answer is yes to 2)!

Democracy, as we practice it today, is doomed! For example, democracy is failing in modern Greece for the same reason it failed in ancient Greece some 2,000 years ago: debt! Many European countries will follow Greece. So will America, eventually!

Worse yet for America, China is not only a fierce competitor economically and politically, but also culturally mature enough to even contemplate such a ridiculous thing as legalizing same-sex marriage!

5. Closing

America, reform our political system as I have suggested (Solution for America (Version 3)), or become an also-ran, second to China!
