Is the European debt crisis merely the latest version of Germany’s long standing ambition to occupy Europe with its own political authority? Is what is going on the economic equivalent of the military efforts of the first half of the twentieth century? The 60 Minutes segment by Steve Croft on 8 April 2012 takes on this question directly. How directly? Well, Croft asked the Finance Minister for Germany, Wolfgang Schauble.
In the program the opinion is expressed that the Mediterranian Europeans are looking at the current situation exactly that way. In another part of the program the northern Europeans are characterized as hard-working, frugal and tax-paying citizens while the southern Europeans are said to be laid-back, non-industrious and tax-avoiding.
