Scissors, cans of deodrant and bottles of drinking water make up the bulk of items confiscated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at U.S. airports every day.
Every week, however, TSA security checks uncover scores of loaded firearms in traveller’s carry-on luggage as well. In 2013, the TSA found 1,813 firearms in carry-on baggage. By the end of June 2014, that number already stood at 1,025
So far, Dallas/Forth Worth International and Hartsfield Jackson in Atlanta confiscated the most guns in 2014 with 46 each. Phoenix Sky Harbor International rounds off the top three with 36 while Tampa International and George Bush Intercontinental complete the top five. Americans are free to transport firearms by air as long as they are checked in locked hard-sided containers. Punishment for bringing a gun onboard an aircraft can result in arrest or a fine of up to $7,500.
