The growing popularity of video streaming services has led to a surge in internet traffic in recent years. According to Sandvine’s Global Internet Phenomena Report, Netflix and YouTube account for more than half of North American downstream traffic at peak hours.
The hours and hours we spend watching our favorite TV shows on Netflix or the cutest cat videos on YouTube have changed the composition of internet traffic significantly. The rise of video streaming services has led to exponential growth of data traffic in the past few years. Netflix, YouTube, iTunes, Amazon and Hulu are all among the biggest traffic hogs in North America, accounting for almost 60 percent of total traffic during peak periods.
