More beer is consumed per capita in North Dakota than any other U.S. state, according to a ranking compiled by the Beer Institute. Beer is proving as popular as ever in the United States and it is estimated that some 99 million Americans drink the beverage regularly.
North Dakotans consumed an impressive 45.8 gallons of beer per capita in 2012, ahead of New Hampshire and Montana. Even though the state does not have a well established beer industry, it has the right target market – a large population of young males employed through its oil and gas boom.
Utah had the lowest level of per capita beer consumption in the United States in 2012 – 20.2 gallons, more than half the level found in North Dakota. This can be attributed to its large non drinking Mormon population in addition to restrictive alcohol regulations.
