July 2011 Retail Sales Much Weaker Than Headlines Suggest
The headline improvement in advanced retail sales for July 2011 is up 0.5% month-over-month, and 8.5% year-over-year. But when the data is viewed critically the inflation adjusted month-over-month change is down over 2%, and the year-over-year improvement is only 2.9%. Continue reading

Retail Sales Show Strength in June 2011

Retail: Sales Holding or Improved in May 2011
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), retail sales fell 0.2% in May 2011. Econintersect believes retail sales have improved over April – even on an inflation adjusted basis. Continue reading

April 2011 Advance Retail Sales: Not Bad, Not Good
US Census’ advance data shows retail sales for April 2011 is up a solid 7.6% year-over-year (YoY) and 0.5% month-over-month (MoM) using seasonally adjusted data. Econintersect’s analysis confirms that retail sales were strong – but sales may actually be down MoM. Add some analysis of the effects of inflation, holidays, and where the increases occurred – and good data becomes only mediocre.
