What We Read Today 23 November 2015

Econintersect: Every day our editors collect the most interesting things they find from around the internet and present a summary "reading list" which will include very brief summaries (and sometimes longer ones) of why each item has gotten our attention. Suggestions from readers for "reading list" items are gratefully reviewed, although sometimes space limits the number included.

This feature is published every day late afternoon New York time. For early morning review of headlines see "The Early Bird" published every day in the early am at GEI News (membership not required for access to "The Early Bird".).

  • Yellen Defends Seven Years of Low Interest Rates in Letter to Nader (Bloomberg)  Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, responding to a letter calling for higher interest rates on behalf of savers, said Americans would have been worse off had the central bank not kept rates near zero since 2008, and repeated that she expects to tighten policy “gradually” after liftoff.

  • US issues worldwide travel alert (BBC News)  The US has issued a global travel alert for its citizens in response to "increased terrorist threats".  The state department said "current information" suggested the Islamic State group, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and others continued "to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions".  The alert, it said, will remain in place until 24 February 2016.

“Many people in the sector still believe they should be paid entrepreneurial wages for turning up to work with a regular salary, a pension and probably a health-care scheme and playing with other people’s money.  There doesn’t seem to be anything entrepreneurial about that except the compensation structures.”

More Mexicans Leaving Than Coming to the U.S. (Pew Research Center)  The flow has been away from the U.S. for the past 10 years, but accelerated the last 4 years.

We thus need to distinguish between interest in terms of money and interest in terms of goods. The first thought suggested by this fact is that the rate of interest in money is “nominal” and that in goods “real.” But this distinction is not sufficient, for no two forms of goods maintain or are expected to maintain, a constant price ratio toward each other. There are therefore just as many rates of interest in goods as there are forms of goods diverging in value.
