Wearing spacesuits weighing 50 kilos, researchers bored the rocks of the Austrian Alps on Friday (August 7) as they carried out experiments as part of a simulated mission to Mars.
At 3,000 metres above sea level, the Kaunertal glacier valley offers what experts describe as ideal conditions for replicating Mars.
Scientists believe there was water on Mars around three million years ago, but it has now turned into a similar form of glacier with ice beneath a surface of rock or sand.
