Twitter Fails To Reignite Its Growth Engine

by Felix Richter, Statista.com

When Twitter reported its fourth quarter earnings yesterday, those who had hoped that the company finally found a way to reignite its user growth were sorely disappointed.

Instead of reversing the trend and reaccelerating user growth, Twitter had to admit that its user base didn't grow at all during the past three months. In fact, when excluding those users who only use Twitter via SMS, the company lost 2 million users over the holiday quarter. Twitter now has 305 million monthly active users, down from 307 million in the previous quarter. It was the first-ever user decline on a quarterly basis for the company that is in desperate need of positive headlines.

The fact that Twitter's revenue jumped 48 percent to $710 million and that the bottom line looked better than analysts had expected wasn't enough to calm the nerves of the company's nervous shareholders: Twitter's stock price was down 5 percent on Thursday morning, about to hit yet another all-time low.

This chart illustrates the deceleration of Twitter's user growth.
