In May 2014, the NHTSA released statistics showing that there were more than 333,000 accidents involving a commercial truck in 2012.
Those accidents caused injuries to more than 100,000 people and led to nearly 4,000 fatalities—meaning that more than 10 people were killed in a truck crash every single day. Of those people who suffered a fatality, more than 80% were individuals who were NOT in the commercial truck at the time of the accident. What is worse is that the number has been steadily rising since 2009.
