-- this post authored by Felix Richter

As Thanksgiving weekend is quickly approaching, retailers in the United States are gearing up for what is without a doubt the busiest season of the year.

That goes for brick-and-mortar stores as well as for online retailers, as many consumers are still splitting their holiday budgets evenly across channels.

Take Amazon for example: the e-commerce giant’s revenue typically spikes by 40-60 percent in the holiday quarter, putting an enormous strain on the company’s logistics backbone. As our chart illustrates, Amazon hires thousands of seasonal workers every year to help carry the workload across its network of fulfillment and sortation centers and customer service sites.

This year, Amazon hired more than 120,000 people in the U.S. alone for the holiday season. According to the company’s statement on the matter, many of last year’s seasonal positions were transitioned to regular jobs after the holidays and the same is expected for this year. Following the acquisition of Whole Foods, Amazon’s global workforce grew to more than 540,000 employees this year.
