War in Afghanistan: the Answer is More Troops, the Question is Why

Written by

On August 21, 2017, President Trump addressed the nation to lay out his new strategy in Afghanistan. Overall, it was a good speech (Full Transcript and Video: Trump's Speech on Afghanistan), although the strategy is neither new nor good - It's more of the same, by sending an undisclosed amount of additional American troops to Afghanistan.

My position on Afghanistan is well documented. Three informative readings:

  1. America's War in Afghanistan.
  2. President Trump and War.
  3. Sending No More American Troops to Afghanistan!

In this post, I will simply extract eight quotes from President Trump's speech and comment on them.

1. Quote #1

As we send our bravest to defeat our enemies overseas — and we will always win.

Comment: We have lost most of the major wars since WWII, from Vietnam to Iraq. Specifically with regard to Afghanistan, no invader has ever won there, from Alexander de Great of more than 2,000 years ago, to the British in the mid-1800s, and to the Soviets in the mid-1980s. America will prove to be no exception!

2. Quote #2

That is why shortly after my inauguration, I directed Secretary of Defense Mattis and my national security team to undertake a comprehensive review of all strategic options in Afghanistan and South Asia.

Comment: It was wrong for you to have assigned this task to the military!

3. Quote #3

My original instinct was to pull out. And historically, I like following my instincts.

Comment: Keep following your instinct with better reasoning!

4. Quote #4

Conditions on the ground, not arbitrary timetables, will guide our strategy from now on.

Comment: There have never been any "arbitrary timetables" to guide our strategy! It has mostly been "the re-election, stupid!" Two recent examples:

  1. President Bush launched the Iraq War, on March 20, 2003, at least partially for his re-election bid in 2004! For more, read: What's The Real Cost of The Iraq War?
  2. President Obama set up timetables for both Iraq and Afghanistan for his re-election bid in 2012! For more, read: President Obama and War.

5. Quote #5

We are not nation-building again.

Comment: Agree, totally!

6. Quote #6

But we will no longer use American military might to construct democracies in faraway lands or try to rebuild other countries in our own image. Those days are now over. Instead, we will work with allies and partners to protect our shared interests.

Comment: Agree!

7. Quote #7

Under my administration, many billions of dollars more is being spent on our military, and this includes vast amounts being spent on our nuclear arsenal and missile defense.

Comment: President Trump, you are spending too much on our military, while cutting everywhere else! For more, read: The Evil Military-Industrial Complex.

8. Quote #8

And we must achieve an honorable and enduring outcome worthy of the enormous price that so many have paid.

Comment: Agree!

9. Closing

Donald Trump is likely to become yet another war President, just like his two predecessors, George W. Bush and Barack Obama!
