Most Gun Deaths In The United States Have A Tragic Motive

by Felix Richter,

-- this post authored by Dyfed Loesche

Gun violence in the United States is a big issue.

Most cases have a tragic twist that doesn’t make the news very often. While mass shootings and terrorism, or gun deaths caused by police are featured regularly, most gun deaths in America are linked to suicide.

[Editor's Note: Is suicide gun violence as it is self directed?]

According to research by FiveThirtyEight almost two thirds of the more than 33,000 deaths in America are linked to this motive. Men are involved in 85 percent of the cases, about half of whom are over the age of 45. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline helps prevent suicide 24/7 with free and confidential support for people in distress.
