Super Mario, The Timeless Bestseller

by Felix Richter, Statista.com

When Apple held its big presentation yesterday, there were very few surprises.

Even the most secretive company in the world, it seems, has trouble keeping secrets these days. Almost every detail about its new products had been accurately predicted beforehand thanks to information leaking from sources close to the company's suppliers.

There was one big moment of surprise though, namely the appearance of the world's most popular plumber. Super Mario stole the show when his creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage to announce the imminent smartphone debut of the most iconic video game character of all time.

"Super Mario Run" will make its long-awaited debut on iOS devices in time for the holiday season and, given Mario's track record (see the chart below), the game is an almost guaranteed success. With Super Mario, Nintendo has managed the rare feat of creating a video game character that bridges generations. "Super Mario Bros", the most-successful game featuring Mario and his brother Luigi was published in 1985 and today, more than 30 years later, the announcement of a Super Mario smartphone game was enough to make Nintendo's stock price jump almost 15 percent.

THis chart shows the best-selling Super Mario video games of all time.
