Road Ahead Looking Clear For Corbyn

by Felix Richter,

-- this post authored by Martin Armstrong

The high court ruled last week against a case brought by Labour party donor Michael Foster, challenging the national executive committee's decision to allow current party leader Jeremy Corbyn to stand as a candidate in the impending leadership election without having collected at least 51 supporters within the party - something that is mandatory for all challengers.

This means Corbyn has a clear road in front of him for a head to head battle with Owen Smith for control of the party. While Smith has the most allies among MPs and MEPs, the embattled Corbyn still enjoys a seemingly unassailable level of support from Labour party members outside of parliament. A recent poll by Opinium for The Observer showed that a majority of 54 percent of the 2,231 Labour supporters would vote for Jeremy in an election.

While there were around 450 respondents who stated that they didn't know who to vote for, Corbyn certainly seems to have a comfortable lead at this stage of the race.

This chart shows the latest voting intention of Labour party members for the leadership contest between Corbyn and Smith.
