Women's Presence In National Parliaments

by Felix Richter, Statista.com

-- this post authored by Niall McCarthy

Last week, David Cameron left Downing Street for the final time.

Theresa May replaced him after an audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace before naming her frontbench team. She became Britain's second female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher and she is expected to promote a string of her fellow female Conservative colleagues into key cabinet positions.

29.4 percent of British MPs are currently women (191 out of 650) but how does that compare to other countries? According to data compiled by the World Bank, Britain comes 43rd out of 186 countries for political gender representation. Rwanda and Bolivia's parliaments were 63 and 53 percent female respectively in 2015.

This chart shows the proportion of seats held by women in national parliaments in 2015.
