On 26 April 2016, former Greek Finance Minister and current professor of economics at the University of Athens delivered the annual Robert Heilbroner Memorial Lecture, "The Future of Capitalism," at The New School for Social Research in New York City. The program was introduced by Amwar Shaikh, Chair of the Department of Economics and then Varoufakis is introduced by Teresa Ghilarducci, Professor of Economics and Bernard L. and Irene Schwartz Chair in Economic Policy Analysis. Varoufakis starts speaking at 11 minutes.
Two short addresses follow Prof. Varoufakis, one by Masters Degree candidate Ebba Boye from Norway and a second by New School Professor of Economics Mark Setterfield, who then join Varoufakis in a panel discussion addressing submitted questions from the audience.
The Varoufakis lecture reviews comparisons between natural sciences and social sciences, especially economics. He reviews the history of democracy and economics, focusing on relationships to capitalism. The lecture relates particularly to the current situation of the EU (European Union) and future prospects. The lecture and following discussions also consider the political landscape in the U.S.
