The Cities Most Threatened By Rising Sea Levels

by Felix Richter,

-- this post authored by Niall McCarthy

What will rising sea levels do to the world's major cities?

According to a Climate Central report, a 4°C increase in global temperature will hit Asian cities very badly : in Mumbai and Calcutta, half of the population would be under water. In Shanghai, a city of 23 million people, it is more than three-quarters.

In New York, nearly 25 per cent of its population could be submerged in the event of a 4°C increase in global temperature, the same as in Rio de Janeiro but nearly twice as much as in London!

This graphic shows how selected megacities will be affected by rising sea levels.
