The Smartphone Market Is Not A Two-Horse Race

by Felix Richter, Statista.com

Contrary to what the international media coverage might suggest, the smartphone market is about much more than just Apple and Samsung.

While these two companies are still market leaders, their combined market share amounted to no more than 37.3 percent in the most recent quarter. Despite Apple (and to a lesser degree Samsung) stealing the headlines, the fact is that the smartphone market is not (and hasn't been for some time) a two-horse race.

According to IDC, other smartphone vendors, led by Chinese powerhouses Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi, shipped a combined total of more than 220 million smartphones in the past three months, as demand for low to mid-range handsets in emerging markets continued to surge. Meanwhile Samsung and Apple shipped 84.5 and 48 million devices, respectively, retaining their lead of the market for now.

This chart illustrates that the global smartphone market is not a two-horse race between Apple and Samsung.
