December 22, Weather and Climate Report: U.S. Seasonal Outlook Update - A Complex Situation

December 22nd, 2014
in econ_news, syndication

by Sig Silber The Seasonal Outlooks were released on December 18. They are not very different from the November 20 release. However the complexity has not been reduced as one might have anticipated. NOAA is still struggling with how to integrate a "near El Nino" and an at least short-term change to PDO Positive into their Seasonal Outlook and at least this time they have acknowledged that the El Nino activity is more of a Central Pacific nature and shifts weather patterns to the west. Also the anomalous reappearance of the high pressure ridge off the West Coast makes short-term forecasting difficult both for the meteorologists and their computer models. more »

December 15 Weather and Climate Report: Not Quite El Nino?

December 16th, 2014
in econ_news, syndication

by Sig Silber This potential El Nino appears to be weakening going into January becoming a "near El Nino" but it will still have impacts especially because the water of the Pacific Coast is warmer than usual creating what is called a positive PDO pattern. It looks like the weather pattern is changing into a winter pattern which will make forecasting easier for NOAA. A new Seasonal Outlook will be issued on Thursday and it will be interesting to see if the reduced strength of the forecasted El Nino is reflected in the new Seasonal Outlook. more »

by Sig Silber El Nino may already be on the wane at least temporarily. In this report I show a method for forecasting the probability of drought in different parts of the Lower 48 through 2050. It can be looked at as one reasonable scenario. It shows how drought moves around the Lower 48 in response to the condition of our oceans. This type of information can be very useful to all those impacted by drought or non-drought. more »

December 1 Weather and Climate Report - It is Starting to Look a Lot Like El Nino

December 2nd, 2014
in News, econ_news, syndication

Written by Sig Silber It may be weak and the Hovmoller analysis, analogs analysis, and some other information published by NOAA is not encouraging. But there are definitely signs of an El Nino both the updated Outlook for December issued on Sunday and in the actually weather patterns that are occurring. Thus NOAA which launched its El Nino campaign. perhaps two months earlyis now in a position where the weather has caught up to their forecast. Calibrating the Seasonal Outlook to the strength and other characteristics of this El Nino will remain a challenge made a bit easier as it seems to be weak but at this point a traditional El Nino. more »
