According to the United Nations, the number of refugees worldwide exceeded 50 million in 2013, its highest level since the Second World War.
The largest number of people displaced by war and persecution come from Afghanistan with neighbouring Pakistan hosting more than any other nation worldwide, 1.6 million. Iran comes second, hosting 857,400 refugees while Lebanon also plays a major role in hosting displaced people, taking in 856,500 of them by late 2013.
