Major natural disasters occur regularly around the world. From hurricanes to floods to wildfires, people lost their lives, homes, and property at a devastating rate over the last year. Employers, meanwhile, must deal with the impact of such events on their employees and operations.
Through Mercer’s 2013 Survey Report on Workforce Readiness: When Disaster Strikes, 84 organizations worldwide reflected on the past year (2012) and their own preparedness.
“Among the themes and advice that emerged, respondents emphasized that employers need to be prepared with policies and procedures in place to react quickly and effectively; and when events occur, they must issue clear and ongoing communications with all affected parties,” said Samantha Polovina, the Mercer Principal responsible for the survey. “Respondents also emphasized the necessity for management — at headquarters and on-site — to be flexible when such an incident occurs.”
