Econintersect: Nine of eleven major Asia/Pacific stock markets closed trading Tuesday, March 22, with gains. Two markets were essentially unchanged: Jakarta was down 0.03% and Malaysia was up 0.01%. Most of the gains were modest, ranging from 0.1% (Sydney) to 0.8% (Mumbai and Hong Kong).Tokyo continued recovery from its 22% loss following the earthquake and tsunami with another big advance. The Nikkei 225 index gained 4.4%. From its intraday low a week ago (March 15) to the Tuesday close the Nikkei has advanced 16.8%, regaining more than half of the loss.
