His wife, Leila Trabelsi, managed to remove $66 million in gold (1.5 metric tons) before Ben Ali fled the country on Friday. A deal between the United States and the Ben Ali regime funneled $349 million in U.S. military aid over to Ben Ali over the course of his 23-year regime, official Pentagon figures tell us.
The report goes on to compare the Ben Ali regime to the Marcos regime in The Phillipines. Courts eventually forced disgorgement of $684 million Marcos' Swiss bank accounts, returned to the Phillipines. This was considerably short of the $1 -$2 billion believed pocketed by Marcos.
